An office move usually happens when the company grows and it has to move its IT equipment to a bigger and better office. But sometimes, smaller companies want to move to another location is they see that their new place is better for work and/or it is cheaper. Whatever the case is, you have to know how to move IT equipment safely. By definition, IT equipment means all of your computers, computer hardware, printers, servers, telephones, and so on. So, how can you move your office IT equipment safely, and how can you do it most efficiently and least expensively? Without further ado, let’s begin.
Take apart your electronics
The first step in moving your IT equipment safely is to take apart everything. Well, it is creating a moving checklist, but this is a story for another time. Start by unplugging your computers. But before you unplug them, you should first turn them off. You can do that by pressing the button which is located behind the PC. It is usually located next to the power cord. After that plug out the power chord. Do that for every computer you own. After that, you should unplug everything from the back of your PC. Those are plugins for your mouse, keyboard, printer, computer screen, and so on.

Pack your equipment properly if you want to move IT equipment safely
Moving and packing a business is not an easy task. It would be best to put your computers in their original packaging. That way you will be certain that your equipment will arrive at your new office safely. But sometimes, we don’t have the original packaging for our equipment. If that is the case, you should buy some packing materials. Those are:
- boxes
- crates
- bins
- plastic wrap
- plastic beads
- newspaper
- towels
- sticky tape
- sticky notes
Start by separating your main components from cables and power cords. Label with sticky notes what goes with what. That way you will know what component goes with which component. This step is very important. After that, you should put your components into boxes. To save space, put all of your cords, cables and similar electronics into one box. They should be safe in one box. For your main components, you should have some safe containers. Start by putting protective materials into containers. Those are plastic beads, newspapers, and similar items. You can even wrap some of them with towels and plastic wrap. Put those items into containers. After that, you should seal properly your containers. Label your containers. And don’t forget to label them with a ‘sensitive’ label. That way you will notify your chosen movers that there is something fragile in those containers.

Don’t move your IT equipment on your own! You should always hire a moving company like Empire State Moving that is specialized in moving IT equipment.
